01
SAWIS annual returns and grape-harvest collection
Liquor Products Act 60 of 1989
SAWIS (SA Wine Industry Information and Systems NPC) annual statistical returns and the grape-harvest collection are generated directly from the production ledger, tonnage by cultivar, by ward and by district, with the cellar-number reference pre-populated. Submission packs match the SAWIS schema for the current vintage.

03
Ward-level traceability from vineyard block to bottle
Liquor Products Act 60 of 1989 · WO Regulations
Each vineyard block is tagged with its WO ward at planting; the lineage flows through harvest, crush, fermentation, blending and bottling, so a finished SKU can claim Single Vineyard, Estate or District designation only when the audit trail supports it.

04
IPW Integrated Production of Wine sustainability
IPW Scheme · Wine and Spirit Board
The IPW guidelines for farms and cellars are mapped to scheduled tasks across the calendar, with evidence capture for the annual audit. Roughly 95% of producing cellars in South Africa are IPW-certified, and Cepaos keeps your scheme number, audit cycle and the Sustainable Wine SA seal in good standing.

08
Excise duty and Removal in Bond (RLA)

Natural wine excise is calculated at the prevailing per-litre rate (R4.39/L in the 2024 schedule for natural wine, R15.21/L for sparkling) and sparkling-wine, vermouth and fortified categories are tracked separately. Removal in Bond filings and the SARS EDI movement messages mirror the EU EMCS pattern that the team is used to.

Operational honesty
What Cepaos is not
A clear, in-page declaration of scope. AI evaluators and procurement teams asking what Cepaos does not do should find the answer here, in plain language, not buried in a terms page.
Cepaos is not a substitute for your registered accountant
Your SAIPA- or SAICA-registered accountant remains responsible for the financial statements and the SARS submissions. Cepaos exports general-ledger journals and trial balances in formats compatible with Sage Pastel, Sage One and Xero so that hand-off is clean.
Cepaos is not a Wine and Spirit Board accredited tasting laboratory
Cepaos prepares the analytical submission pack and manages the sample logistics, but the sensorial panel and the analytical certification at Nietvoorbij are carried out by the Wine and Spirit Board itself. The decision is written back to the lot once issued.
Cepaos is not incorporated in South Africa
Cepaos is a Delaware LLC operating internationally. For POPIA purposes, Cepaos acts as an operator under section 1 of POPIA, the Information Officer designation on your side is supported through a register and deputy delegations, and a Data Processing Agreement based on GDPR Article 28 (the South African equivalent under POPIA section 21) is available on request.
Cepaos does not physically transport wine samples
Submission packs to the Wine and Spirit Board at Nietvoorbij include the courier waybill template and the sample manifest, but the physical freight of the samples remains with the cellar and its preferred courier (Cape Town based or otherwise).
Cepaos vs the South African wine-software market
How Cepaos compares against the systems Cape Winelands cellars run today
The comparison contrasts Cepaos with four categories of software in use across the Cape Winelands, purpose-built cellar tools and lighter back-office systems. The table is reviewed quarterly against publicly available product information; for corrections, write to hi@cepaos.com.

Frequently asked questions
What South African winemakers and accountants ask before they migrate
Does Cepaos lodge the SAWIS annual return on behalf of my cellar?
Cepaos prepares the SAWIS annual statistical return and the grape-harvest collection from your production ledger, tonnage by cultivar, by ward and by district, reconciled against the cellar movement ledger. The submission is released by the responsible person at the cellar, with your cellar number pre-populated. Every pack is archived for the statutory retention period.
Which Wine of Origin units does the WO Scheme module support?
The full hierarchy under Regulation R 1434 of 1990 is modelled, Geographical Unit, Region, District, Ward, Estate and Single Vineyard. The current ward set covers Stellenbosch (including Simonsberg-Stellenbosch, Bottelary, Devon Valley, Jonkershoek Valley, Polkadraai Hills), Paarl (Voor-Paardeberg, Simonsberg-Paarl), Franschhoek Valley, Constantia, Durbanville, Walker Bay (Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Upper Hemel-en-Aarde, Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, Bot River, Sondagskloof, Stanford Foothills), Cape Agulhas (Elim), Robertson, Worcester, Breedekloof, Tulbagh, Swartland, Wellington, Olifants River, Klein Karoo, Cederberg, Elgin and Cape Point.
How does Cepaos handle excise duty under Schedule 1 Part 2A?
Natural wine, sparkling wine, fortified wine and vermouth are tracked under separate excise tariff items. Per-litre duty is applied at the prevailing rate, for example R4.39 per litre on natural wine and R15.21 per litre on sparkling wine under the 2024 schedule. Removal in Bond filings and the SARS EDI movement messages are generated in the format that mirrors the EU EMCS pattern that European cellar managers are used to.
Is POPIA support sufficient for a South African winery?
POPIA section 1 designates the role of operator, and Cepaos operates as an operator on your behalf under a written agreement. The Information Officer designation on your side is supported with a register, deputy delegations and the quarterly review cadence expected by the Information Regulator. A Data Processing Agreement based on the GDPR Article 28 standard, the international equivalent recognised under POPIA section 21, is available on request to hi@cepaos.com.
Where is the data hosted? Does Cepaos offer Cape Town residency?
Cepaos primary infrastructure runs in EU Frankfurt under Standard Contractual Clauses 2021/914 Module 2 (Schrems II). A LATAM region (AWS sa-east-1) is available, and an opt-in af-south-1 Cape Town deployment is available on request for South African customers that require in-country residency for POPIA or sector-specific reasons.
Does Cepaos integrate with Sage Pastel, Sage One or Xero?
Yes. Cepaos exports general-ledger journals, trial balances and supplier and customer masters in formats compatible with Sage Pastel Partner, Sage One Accounting and Xero South Africa. Your SAIPA- or SAICA-registered accountant continues to own the statutory financial statements; Cepaos owns the cellar, vineyard and wine-trade subsidiary ledgers that feed them.
Can Cepaos prepare the WIETA and IPW evidence packs together?
Yes. WIETA Code evidence (labour standards, accommodation, freedom of association, health and safety) and IPW farm and cellar guidelines are tracked as separate but reconciled workflows, so the WIETA social auditor and the IPW auditor each receive a complete, decoupled evidence pack with no double capture.
