Why SAWIS reporting matters
The South African Wine Industry Information and Systems (SAWIS) is the statutory body that collects production data from every cellar in South Africa under the Wine of Origin scheme. Annual returns to SAWIS are mandatory and cover grape intake, wine production volumes, stock declarations, and sales. Cepaos compiles this data from your cellar book so your returns are accurate and timely.
Prerequisites
- Vineyard blocks with ward, district, or region classification in Vineyard > Blocks.
- Harvest records with grape weights and cultivar linked to each block.
- Cellar book with all movements recorded for the production year.
Step by step
1. Access SAWIS reports
In the sidebar, under Compliance, click SAWIS Reporting. The available report types are listed.
2. Select report type
| Report | Deadline | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Grape Intake (Form A) | May annually | All grapes received, by cultivar, origin, and sugar content |
| Production (Form B) | July annually | Wine produced, by type and Wine of Origin certification |
| Stock Declaration | October annually | Current stock by product type and certification |
3. Review auto-populated data
Cepaos pre-fills the selected report from your harvest records, cellar book entries, and current stock. Review each line item and resolve any warnings shown in red.
4. Validate Wine of Origin claims
For certified wines, Cepaos verifies that origin, cultivar, and vintage percentages meet the Wine of Origin thresholds: 100% from the declared ward/district/region for estate wines, 85% for cultivar and vintage.
5. Export and submit
Click Export > CSV to download the report in the format accepted by the SAWIS electronic submission portal. Upload the file to the SAWIS portal to complete your return.
6. Archive
Attach the SAWIS acknowledgement receipt to the report in Cepaos for audit reference.
Frequently asked questions
Does Cepaos submit directly to SAWIS?
Not currently. Cepaos formats the data for the SAWIS portal. You upload the file manually.
What if I receive grapes from another cellar?
Record them as third-party intake with the supplier's SAWIS number. Cepaos maintains traceability across cellars.
