Wine of Origin export certification and target market analyses

How to prepare Wine of Origin export certificates and target-market chemical analyses through Cepaos for the Wine and Spirit Board.

4 min lectura

Why this matters

Wine exported from South Africa must carry a Wine of Origin (WO) certificate issued by the Wine and Spirit Board (WSB) under the Liquor Products Act 60 of 1989. Each shipment also needs a target-market chemical analysis matching the destination's residue limits (SO2, sorbates, allergens). Cepaos compiles the certificate request and the lab pack as a single bundle.

Prerequisites

  • Cellar number registered with the WSB in Settings > Compliance > ZA.
  • Vineyard blocks tagged with ward, district and region.
  • SAWIS production return for the vintage already submitted.
  • SANAS-accredited lab results uploaded to the wine record.

1. Open the WO export module

From the sidebar, go to Compliance > Wine of Origin > Export Certification. The dashboard lists pending shipments and their certification status.

2. Stage the consignment

Add the consignment with destination country, container size, volume in litres and freight booking reference.

3. Confirm WO claims

Cepaos validates:

RuleThreshold
Origin (ward / district / region)100% from the claimed unit for Estate Wine; 85% for region/district
VintageAt least 85% from the declared year
CultivarAt least 85% if a single cultivar is claimed

Any breach is flagged red.

4. Attach target-market analysis

Upload the SANAS lab report. Cepaos compares results against the destination's residue limits and shows compliance per parameter (total SO2, free SO2, volatile acidity, sorbic acid, allergens).

5. Generate the WSB submission

Click Generate WSB request. Cepaos produces a signed PDF plus the SAWIS-linked supporting data ready for upload to the SAWIS online system.

FAQ

What if the destination has stricter SO2 limits than SA?

The target-market analysis must meet the destination limit. Cepaos blocks certification if a result exceeds it and prompts you to reblend or re-treat.

Do bulk shipments need the same certificate?

Yes. Bulk shipments to be bottled overseas still need a WO certificate and a target-market analysis at the time of dispatch.
