Frequently asked questions

How is the cost per bottle calculated?
All batch costs (grapes, inputs, labour, energy, barrels, bottling and the share of overheads) are added up and divided by the final litres after losses. The cost per bottle is the cost per litre × 0.75.
How is the barrel cost allocated?
Barrels are depreciated by how long the wine occupies them: litres in barrel × (price ÷ capacity) × (months in barrel ÷ useful life in months). For example, 12 months in a barrel with a 3-year useful life carries one third of its price.
How are estate-grown grapes costed?
The growing cost per hectare is divided by the yield in kg/ha and multiplied by the kg you process, so estate fruit is compared on the same basis as bought-in fruit.
Margin or markup?
The calculator uses margin on the selling price: with a 40% margin, price = cost ÷ 0.6. A 40% markup on cost would give a lower price (cost × 1.4).
