What is Georgia's GI system
Georgia's wine appellation system, governed by the Law on Appellations of Origin and Geographical Indications (2010), protects wine names at two levels: Appellation of Origin (AO) and Geographical Indication (GI). AO wines such as Tsinandali, Mukuzani, and Kindzmarauli must meet strict rules on origin, varieties, and winemaking methods. GI wines have broader geographic requirements. The National Intellectual Property Center (Sakpatenti) registers these designations. Cepaos tracks compliance automatically.
Prerequisites
- Vineyard blocks with AO/GI zone assigned in Vineyard > Blocks.
- Harvest records linked to blocks with accurate weights.
- Cellar book with complete winemaking records.
- Lab results in the Lab module.
Step by step
1. Access GI compliance
In the sidebar, under Compliance, click GI/AO Certification. Your wines are listed with their origin breakdown.
2. Review origin percentages
For AO wines, 100% of grapes must come from the defined micro-zone. For GI wines, the percentage depends on the specific GI rules.
| Wine | Kakheti (GI) | Tsinandali (AO) | Other |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rkatsiteli 2026 | 100% | 100% | 0% |
| Red Blend 2026 | 95% | 0% | 5% |
3. Verify variety and method requirements
Each AO has specific rules:
| AO | Varieties | Special Requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Tsinandali | Rkatsiteli, Mtsvane | Aged minimum 2 years (6 months in oak) |
| Mukuzani | Saperavi | Aged minimum 1 year in oak |
| Kindzmarauli | Saperavi | Naturally semi-sweet, specific sugar levels |
| Khvanchkara | Alexandrouli, Mujuretuli | Naturally semi-sweet |
Cepaos checks your lab data and ageing records against these requirements.
4. Track ageing periods
For AOs requiring minimum ageing, Cepaos monitors the ageing timeline and alerts you when the minimum period is met.
5. Generate certification documents
Click Generate AO/GI Certificate. The document includes origin proof, variety verification, ageing records, and analytical results.
6. Submit to the National Wine Agency
Download and submit for official certification. After approval, enter the certificate number in Cepaos.
Frequently asked questions
How many AOs does Georgia have?
Georgia has 18 Appellations of Origin. Cepaos includes all of them with their specific requirements.
Can I track both AO and GI for the same wine?
Yes. A wine from Tsinandali automatically falls within the Kakheti GI. Cepaos shows both classifications.
