Equipment or sensor? What each thing is
The difference between connected equipment, cellar sensors, the gateway and scales in Cepaos — and where to find each one in the menu.
The rule in one sentence
Equipment DOES things. Sensors MEASURE. The Gateway is the device that connects them to the internet.
Once that is clear, you know where to look for everything in Cepaos.
Connected equipment
A piece of equipment is a machine that performs physical work in your winery: the press, the bottling line, the pump, the filter, the CIP station, the chiller. Besides sending telemetry (status, temperature, alarms), it can receive commands: pause, resume, start a cycle — depending on the manufacturer and your plan.
- Where: menu IoT & Automation → Equipment → Connected equipment.
- What you see: each machine with its status (online / no signal), last signal and access to the live view.
- What you can do: connect a new machine, watch its telemetry and — with the control module — send it commands from Remote control.
Cellar sensors
A sensor is a device that only measures: tank temperature, barrel-room humidity, density during fermentation. It does not receive commands — it is pure telemetry. You define alerts on its readings (e.g. "warn me if tank 4 goes above 18 °C").
- Where: menu IoT & Automation → Monitoring · Cellar → Cellar sensors.
- What you see: live readings per tank/barrel, history and automation rules.
Gateway
The Gateway is the physical device (a small box such as a Raspberry Pi or PLC bridge) that collects the signals from your equipment and sensors inside the winery and pushes them to the internet. Without a configured gateway, devices with no connectivity of their own cannot talk to Cepaos.
- Where: menu IoT & Automation → Equipment → Gateway.
- Practical rule: if a machine shows "no signal" and was working before, check the gateway first (power and network).
What about scales?
The reception scale is a hybrid case: it is a physical device (like equipment) but its job is to measure weight (like a sensor). That is why it has its own entry under IoT & Automation → Equipment → Scales, wired into the grape and supplies reception flow.
Summary
In one table: equipment does, sensors measure, the gateway connects and the scale weighs. When in doubt: if you can give it an order, it is equipment; if it only informs you, it is a sensor.
