How to manage PDO and PGI certification for Greek wines

Step-by-step guide to tracking Protected Designation of Origin and Protected Geographical Indication compliance for Greek wines in Cepaos.

2 min lectura

What are PDO and PGI in Greece

Greece has a rich system of wine appellations. Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) wines — formerly OPAP and OPE — must come from a defined zone, use approved varieties, and meet strict winemaking standards. Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) wines have broader geographic boundaries and more flexible variety rules. Cepaos tracks grape origin and variety to verify PDO/PGI eligibility automatically.

Prerequisites

  1. Vineyard blocks with PDO/PGI zone assigned in Vineyard > Blocks.
  2. Harvest records linked to blocks with accurate weights.
  3. Lab results (alcohol, acidity, SO2) in the Lab module.
  4. Cellar book with complete records.

Step by step

1. Access PDO/PGI compliance

In the sidebar, under Compliance, click PDO/PGI Certification. Your current-vintage wines are listed with their origin breakdown.

2. Review origin percentages

For PDO wines, 100% of grapes must come from the declared zone. For PGI wines, at least 85% must originate from the declared region.

WineNemea (PDO)Peloponnese (PGI)Other
Agiorgitiko Reserve 2026100%0%
Red Blend 202670%90%10%

The Agiorgitiko qualifies for Nemea PDO. The Red Blend qualifies for Peloponnese PGI but not Nemea PDO.

3. Check variety rules

Each PDO zone specifies permitted varieties. Cepaos compares your lot's varieties against the approved list:

  • Nemea: Agiorgitiko only.
  • Santorini: Assyrtiko (minimum 75%), Athiri, Aidani.
  • Naoussa: Xinomavro only.

Non-compliant varieties are flagged.

4. Verify analytical requirements

Some PDOs require minimum alcohol levels or maximum yields. Cepaos checks these against your lab data and harvest records.

5. Generate certification documents

Click Generate PDO/PGI Certificate. Cepaos produces a document with origin proof, variety breakdown, analytical results, and production volume.

6. Submit to KEOSOE

Download the document and submit it to KEOSOE for official certification. After approval, enter the certification number in Cepaos.
