What is a wine gallon
A wine gallon is the standard unit of measure used by the TTB for all wine reporting and taxation in the United States. One wine gallon equals 128 fluid ounces (approximately 3.785 liters). All volumes on TTB forms — the 5120.17, excise tax returns, and bond calculations — must be expressed in wine gallons.
Why accurate conversion matters
Conversion errors between metric units and wine gallons can lead to:
- Incorrect tax payments (underpayment triggers penalties; overpayment means lost cash flow).
- Inventory discrepancies on your 5120.17 that invite TTB scrutiny.
- Label compliance issues if declared volume does not match production records.

Using the calculator
1. Access the calculator
In the sidebar, go to Tools > Wine Gallon Calculator. The calculator opens in a clean interface with input fields.
2. Select conversion type
Choose the type of conversion you need:

4. Adjust conversion factors (optional)
For grape-to-gallon conversions, you can adjust the yield factor:
- 165 gallons per ton: standard for red varieties.
- 155 gallons per ton: standard for white varieties.
- Custom: enter your own factor based on historical yields.
The factor you set here also applies globally in your cellar book and TTB reports (configurable in Settings > General).
5. Copy or export the result
Click Copy to copy the value to your clipboard, or Add to report to insert the converted value directly into the 5120.17 you are preparing.

Automatic conversions in Cepaos

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a wine gallon and a proof gallon?
A wine gallon measures volume only. A proof gallon accounts for alcohol content (1 proof gallon = 1 gallon at 50% ABV). TTB uses wine gallons for table wine and proof gallons for spirits and fortified wine above 24% ABV.
Can I change the default conversion factor?
Yes. Go to Settings > General > Conversion Factors. Changes apply prospectively; historical records retain their original factor.
Does the calculator handle temperature corrections?
Not currently. Wine gallon measurements for TTB purposes are at 60 degrees Fahrenheit. If you measure at a different temperature, apply the correction before entering the value.
