Wine Club for Australian Wineries: Turning Cellar Door Visits into Recurring Revenue

The wine club is the highest-margin DTC channel for Australian wineries. How to structure it, manage members, and scale from your cellar door.

Every weekend, thousands of Australians visit cellar doors across the Barossa Valley, Yarra Valley, Margaret River, and the Hunter Valley. They taste your wines, buy a couple of bottles, and drive home. Most of them never buy from you again, not because they didn't love the wine, but because you didn't give them a reason to stay connected.

The wine club solves that problem.

Why Wine Clubs Work in Australia

Cellar door traffic is your acquisition channel. You've already paid for the tasting room, the staff, and the experience. The wine club converts that sunk cost into recurring revenue.

Australia Post and courier networks are reliable. Unlike some markets, shipping wine within Australia is straightforward and affordable. Most metro areas receive shipments within 2-3 business days.

Australians drink wine regularly. Australia is consistently ranked among the world's top 15 wine-consuming markets by volume, per the OIV's annual State of the World Vine and Wine Sector report. A wine club isn't asking customers to change their behaviour, it's making their existing habit more convenient.

The margin difference is dramatic. Wine sold direct through a club at RRP typically captures a substantially higher margin than the same wine sold through a wholesaler or retailer, because there is no distributor or retailer discount.

Models That Work in Australia

Quarterly Shipment Club

The most common model. Members receive a curated selection of 6 or 12 bottles every quarter. Simple to operate, predictable for the member, and aligned with seasonal releases.

Mixed Pack Club

Each shipment is a curated mix of reds, whites, and rosé (or sparkling). Appeals to the broadest audience and lets you showcase your full range.

Premium Allocation Club

Members get access to limited-production wines, library releases, and single-vineyard bottlings not available in retail. Higher price point, smaller membership, maximum loyalty.

Experience Club

Wine shipments plus member-only events: vintage lunches, barrel tastings, vineyard tours, winemaker dinners. Particularly effective for wineries in tourism-heavy regions.

What You Need Operationally

Recurring billing: direct debit or credit card subscription. Without automated billing, your team wastes hours chasing payments.

Member management: contact details, shipping address, preferences, purchase history. In a system, not a spreadsheet.

Inventory allocation: reserve wine for club shipments before allocating to wholesale or cellar door. Running out of a club wine is a member-retention disaster.

Temperature considerations: Australian summers are brutal. Wine shipped in January or February needs temperature-controlled logistics or careful timing.

Cepaos for Wine Clubs

Cepaos integrates wine club management with winery operations: member registry, shipment billing through the winery's own payment processor (Cepaos never charges your members on its own account), shipment history, churn and LTV metrics. All in one mobile-first platform.
